Yes. Two tiles can only be connected through a path with at most two turns — straight, L-shaped, Z-shaped, or U-shaped. The entire path must be completely clear of tiles on any layer; if even one tile blocks it, the match won't register.

What happens if a tile is covered by another one above it?

A tile can't be selected if another tile sits directly on the layer above it. You need to clear that tile first to uncover the one underneath.

How do combos affect my score?

Matching tiles back to back raises your combo multiplier, up to a maximum of 15x. Your base score is multiplied by the combo, and clearing another pair within 3 seconds adds a speed bonus on top.

What do hints, shuffle, and magic items do?

A hint reveals one currently matchable pair. Shuffle rearranges the remaining tiles on the board. Magic items are earned every 5 combo streak (5, 10, 15...) — though you won't get a duplicate reward for a combo count already rewarded in the current stage — and you also earn one for clearing a level. Using one lets you instantly clear any matching pair, ignoring the path rule.

What if I run out of hints and shuffles?

You start with 5 hints and 3 shuffles, and get extra ones every level that's a multiple of 3. Once they're gone, you can fall back on magic items or study the board carefully to find a valid path yourself.

What happens if I don't clear the board in time?

The game ends when the timer hits zero, showing your final score and the level you reached. Starting at level 3, a failed match also costs you 3 seconds off the timer, so choose carefully.

What changes as I level up?

The board grows wider and taller and gains more layers, eventually reaching up to a 14×9 grid stacked four floors high. New food types appear, and the time limit and match-failure penalty conditions change as well.

Where are my best score and leaderboard saved?

Both your best score and leaderboard are saved locally in your browser (localStorage) on the device you're playing on. No login or server account is needed, and your records persist even after you close and reopen the game.

Can I play Food Match on mobile?

Yes, it runs directly in your mobile browser. Tap tiles with your finger to select them. The game is optimized for landscape orientation, so you'll be prompted to rotate your device if you're holding it in portrait mode.
